FOR THE FEAST OF THE HOLY MARTYR BROTHERS
CRISPINO, AND CRISPINIANO
Celebrated in their Church in Trastevere by the University of the SHOEMAKERS, and SLIPPER-MAKERS of Rome.
SONNET
DEDICATED TO THE MOST EMINENT AND REVEREND GENTLEMAN, THE LORD
CARD[INAL] GIROLAMO CASANATTA
MOST VIGILANT PROTECTOR.
At the behest of Messrs. CONSOLI, and CAMERLENGO of the said University of the Shoemakers, and Slipper-Makers of Rome.
Surrounded by the South Wind, by Palms, and by Splendors CRISPINO, and CRISPINIAN of ardent Zeal: Though they be young they intently desire To turn their Hearts to the Heavenly Mansion.
They disdain the Pomps, and scorn the Treasures, That always blind Mortals idolize; In order to suffer for GOD, Pains, and Torments, They flee from Lazio, and avoid the Honors.
They fly to Gaul to spread the Faith; For the Martyrdom the One yearns, and the Other pines, In order for both to turn to the Supernal Seat.
Now, if you do not moan: you are, Mortal, a Snake; While a Blessed PAIR today one sees Shed for CHRIST a Sea of Blood.
