friend. This will not violate the principle I have before laid down, because, the pamphlet is already prepared, & there is certainly a material difference between inserting and striking out. If however, there be, in your estimation, any impropriety in your assenting to this wish, I trust you will say do and I will relinquish the idea. The campaign for the next Presidential Election has opened, and although rather prematurely, has already had the effect of exhibiting a serious want of unanimity and co-operation among the allies. Can it be possible that Mr. Calhoun has the vanity to set himself up in opposition to Mr. Lownds & Mr. Adams both? or will Mr. Lownds withdraw before the formidable and aspiring Secretary of War? I hope all three will persevere in their pretentions. unclear Adams & Mr. Calhoun will probably divided the eastern Federalists I would willingly admit, but that either of them can get the republicans, in any considerable number, in any part of the Union I am unwilling to believe Mr. Lownds has any better claims upon that unclear than either of them, and yet I do not believe that he can be supported. From these conflicting parties however, good may result to the real Republican cause. I hope your old friend Mr. Clay will not suffer himself to be duped, and his name made to subserve the ambitious views of the young secretary.
