laying down was soon asleep. I woke no more until after daylight. As I slept during this entire escape I had in my dreams, all the time, my undertaking on my mind. Just after daylight I was awakened by some persons talking in a low voice near me. I gently raised the blanket unclear from over my eyes saw two men passing near me. One of them appeared to be a rebel soldier with his cartridge box and belt but no gun, the other seemed like one of our prisoners as they passed not twenty feet from me one said, "We will wait here till our men come along." What he meant I know not, but at any rate I was glad to see them pass on without noticing me and as they were traveling toward the road I was soon traveling in the other direction toward the river. I was compelled to "flank" and good many rebel houses during the days march. It proved to be only six miles to Flint River yet this was a full day's march for me. I was laying in the top of a fallen pin tree just before sunset not far from the road where I could watch any movement that might be made.
