dressed in a peculiar manner. Their office was also hereditary, as was that of their assistant priests, & counsellors. When one died his successor was consecrated at the national council house in due form. Each priest had a messenger, who was inducted to office in the following manner. The assistant priest (having notified the candidate) took a staff and a string of white beads, and wound the beads round the staff from top to bottom, and then repaired to the council house, where he called the candidate with a loud voice, by his official name D??? messenger. The candidate, whose common name was rabbit, ???, then came forward and took the staff, and started on a slow trot, went round the council house yard, and back to the place from where he started, and then declared, in the presence of all present, that he accepted the office. Being once appointed, he continued in the office as long as he was able to perform its duties.
