All drank of this water, & washed more or less with it: and were then considered clean from the pollutions of the past year. The men, at times made use of this water in their cleansings during the festival. At twelve o'clock the priest appointed two singers for the men , and two for the women. He then selected two women to lead the female dance. These carried each in her hand a fan made of swan's feathers, and had a certain picture fastened on her head. The women danced in a place by themselves, and the two men appointed to sing for them, were seated on a bench near them. The men danced in the sacred square, where no woman, nor child must come. Each man carried in his hand a switch, with swan's feathers curiously tied to it, giving the whole company when dancing a very beautiful appearance. These switches were doubtless designed for the same purpose as the green boughs of white pine among the Cherokees, (& may we not suppose they had the same origin as the lulebs or lulavs among the Jews). The singers were not seated, but moved from place to place. The dancers advanced towards them, and when they stopped, moved round them. Thus the dance of both parties continued till night. The men then repaired to
