& near the Pecos & reported that Indians or other marauders had stolen from 15 to 20 head of stock from this neighborhood last night - or toward morning & we soon formed the trail & followed it to where it crossed the Pecos. If the thieves were Indians it is evident that they wore boots or shies & were mainly shod in the manner indicated. A few moccasin tracks were unclear found - I ordered Capt Kenedy to send an officer & detachment of 15 men in pursuit - Lieut unclear was ordered & is now from 20 to 30 miles away with the detachment in hot pursuit with a very fair chance of unclear
