Chapter 6 Pge 50 capt Jack and his people all arrived safe into the Lava beds capt Jack occapies the largest cave known as capt Jacks strong hold now days Indians all live in diffrent caves. they make preparerations for war after the Modocs all got well settled in the lava beds they took life easy for about two weeks. Keeping two men on guard night and day. they did not Intended to be caught napping they was especting troops all the time. about Mid day Janruary 15th 1873 one of the Modoc guards saw a large Body of horsemen about two miles west of their camp on a ridge he reported to his chief orderd his men to prepare for Battle. the enemy disapeard. the men that apeard on the ridge was a company that was out on a Scouting expedation. sent out by gen gilliam. from John Fairchilds ranch. near hot or hat creek california gen gilliam had his head quarters at Fairchilds ranch. had about two hundard Soldiers under his command at that time the scouting party returnd to gilliams head quarters late in the evening of the 15th. reported to the genral that they had located the Indian camp. the genral orderd a company of cavelramen on the morning of the 16th to advance on the Indians. and raut them out of the Lava beds. and chase them if they could get them started spare none. the Troops started for the field of action early morning of the 16th
