Cherokee Nation Hamilton GA? 31st march 1834. In presence of Jas? Brown Judge of Circuit Court CN.? Copy. Cherokee Nation. Personally appeared before me, Walter S. Adair?, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court for said nation, John Williams, a citizen of said nation, who deposeth and saith, that he was at the Cherokee Agency on or about the 13th of March last & Woody Russell this family there as Arkansas Emigrants, drawing their rations from the Commissary appointed to furnish said Emigrants, and this deponent further states that he saw these same persons embark on shortly afterwards, on board of a boat furnished to transport the Cherokee Emigrants, and he further states that he has been several years personally acquainted with the said Woody Russell, & he has always been called a White man & for several years been married or living with the said woman he embarked with and that I believe and it is generally understood she is not a native of the said nation but that if she is mixed blood, it is of the African race. And he further states that he has reason to believe, and does believe, that she made application to the Council of the Nation for Citizenship & was refused on the grounds that she was not a native of said nation.
