at 10AM - one left camp and started for Maxon's Spring - taking the Peena Blanca road for ten miles, thence Eastward to Pena Negra head _ and from there to a valley in the mountains near the spring - for camp - The General - Lt Tear + myself mounted - rode over the foot hills trying to find the spring - but darkness overtook us and we had to return _ I carrying the General's new Winchester - not loaded - and I had no cartridges but I felt perfectly safe _ We did not get into camp until quite late - finding the light wagon with a broken tongue -
Unclear 9th Splendid weather - crossed the hills to the Spring at 930 AM - watered all the animals filled Kegs - and then followed the bed of the creek in an Easterly direction for about five miles - went into camp for the night. Maxon's Spring is surrounded by mountains, the water flowing for about 1 mile - then sinks - plenty of it - good - tender - grazing in abundance. had to cross several deep arroyos _ marking them as we went
