FOR THE SOLEMN FESTIVAL OF THE GLORIOUS MARTYRS COSMAS, AND DAMIAN

Celebrated in Rome by the University, and College OF THE BARBERS.

SONNET

DEDICATED TO THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS AND MOST REVEREND GENTLEMAN MONSIGNOR

ANTONIO ALTOVITI

Secretary of the Holy Congregation of the Council, Councillor of the Holy Office, &c.

At the behest of Gio. Battista Fratoddi Consul of the said University, and College.

The Saints are thrown into the Sea, and they come from it miraculously freed.

THE SUN was setting, and his brilliant Chargers Sprinkled the waves with the clearer foam of gold; When, stopped in their Course the burning motions, He saw two Suns fall into the sea.

He trembled confused, and in bright laments To see again the Dawn he had to return, But rising again those from the false silver To put in their face his Bitter Falls.

O Rebel of Heaven Father of error, If the Blessed pair lay in the sea, It was to fish for tears from his sorrow.

More beautiful in face than the Sun she was reborn, That they must not with Cruel anger The Phoenixes of God die in the waters,

F.B.
