ON THE FEAST OF STS. COSMAS AND DAMIAN
SONNET
IN recompense for wonderful works, and good Of two Brothers Cosmas, and Damian Sage physicians, an arrogant insane Tyrant First to drown them in the sea exposes them,
Then they having reached the shore, he proposes to burn them But the fire goes out, and his idea was in vain; In the air he raises them on a Cross, and cruel, and strange Target of stones, & of arrows he makes them;
They return to those who throw stones at them, and arrows And all the Elements seem to refuse To injure the bodies of the blessed Souls:
Do what he might: the torments do not work Only cutting off their Heads God permits To bring them happily to Heaven to the supreme good.
