SAINT CATERINA VIRGIN AND MARTYR

When beheaded by the executioner, white milk flowed out instead of blood.

SONNET

Dedicated to the Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Sir LORD POMPEO FIORAVANTI Primicerius of the Company of Saint Orsola by Maria Curti

Loves Jesus the rose and the white lily (Though they differ) of a similar Love; That one because of the blood has the beautiful vermilion, The other because it discloses his candour.

The one in the torment, & the sufferings Of the cruel Martyrdom despises the danger; The other is within a pure, chaste heart Of the Virginity the Candid Son.

He sees in the purple, and in the thorns and in that (the rose) Himself on the Cross, and in the untouched leaves Recognizes in this (the lily) His Beautiful Mother.

So with double Love in Faith He Struggles; Willing that a sound Virgin Pours instead of blood the Pure Milk.
