Quarry Hill House Wigton - Cumberland England Sunday 24th Sept. 1871 Dear Aunt Abbie Kendal, A good many weeks ago we got a nice letter from you (dated 7 July 1871) showing a remarkable insight into wheres where - whats what- whos who- & what people are doing- in Europe. That letter deserved an answer, & Jennie forgets whether she answered it or not.

Now we have got settled down in this nice house & have had time to turn round, we have more time for writing than we had, sometimes, while we were perpetually moving.

Incessant rain keeps us at home today.

I think of you as still at Kankakee; though I expect to hear, soon, that you have gone further South.

On the 22nd Ult. a downstairs fire occurred
