              Captain Asa H. Holgate, Engineer Corps, having reported in pursuance of orders from the War Department, was assigned to duty as Chief Engineer of this Department May 11. th, per General orders No. 5, C.S. D. T. - Since that day, so far as is officially known Capt. Holgate has not been present in his Office for duty - nor has any Certificate or official communication from him been received, accounting for his absence.
               The Department Commander therefor directs that, at your earliest convenience you call upon Capt. Holgate, now at the Menger Hotel in this city and make thorough professional examination in his case.  Be pleased to state in your report, if you find that he has been prevented from attending to his duties by sickness, the nature and character of his disease and the degree of disability incurred thereby, also if you have been professionally called upon to treat him, if not who has.

                  In the month of January 1872, a Scout of sixty (60) armed Mexicans from the vicinity of San Diego, a small town about thirty miles from Chihuahua, Mexico, crossed to this side of the Rio Grande in pursuit of a party of Indians, who had stolen a lot of horses at San Diego.
                  The Commanding General of this Department will be indebted if you will give him in the form of an affidavit all the information in your possession concerning this matter.
                  In the case you know of other persons, who may have any knowledge of the facts, he will be pleased to have you communicate their names and residence to him.
