La Porte Ind. April 23rd 1864

My dear good wife

    Your letter written last Sunday & Monday reached here in last night's mail.  I was glad to hear from you & the children.  I had not heard from you for a week.   I have written you very frequently & I hope you got all my letters.  I intended to have gone down to the farm the first of the coming week so as to bring the horses back & turn them out up here for a couple of months but we have just had a heavy rain & the roads will not be passable for something again.  The grass looks very green here now.  I called on My Hathaway night before last.  I had a very pleasant call.  She inquired kindly after you & Mary.
