MCINTOSH Commanding Officer Fort McIntosh, Texas Sir:

                 I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of Febry. 24th, and in reply I am directed by the Commanding General to inform you, that he regrets you did not, before sending your letter ascertain if the statement was true, that armed Mexicans were on this side of the river.
                General directions can only be given you, viz:      to protect American citizens, whenever possible, and to arrest and disarm any Mexican force crossing to our side of the river, and to hold them as prisoners, reporting the facts as quickly as possible to these Headquarters.

DUNCAN Commanding Officer Fort Duncan, Texas, Sir:

                               In the event of Colonel Valdez coming to this side with his force, as suggested by him in his interview with you, as not improbable, you are instructed to disarm the entire command and disband it.    You will carefully store everything taken from this Command, and sent to these Headquarters a copy of Invoices and Receipts given, which should state their condition when received.
            Such Subsistence-stores as may be absolutely necessary for the immediate relief of Col. Valdez' force, you may issue on his receipt,
