Dear Sir:
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 15th inst., making inquiries concerning the arrest of detention of Colonel Valdez and other Mexican Officers, now held by their parole in this city. Colonel Ramirez and party were arrested by Captain Meyer, Commanding Fort McIntosh, April 6, 1872, for alleged violation of our Neutrality laws. Colonel Valdez was arrested by same Officer, April 26, 1872, for alleged same offense. The papers in the case have been forwarded to the Government and I have been instructed to retain these Officers until Civil Officers of the Government can investigate the charges against them. I have no further connection with the cases, except to obey such orders as I may receive, concerning them. I have this day telegraphed that the Civil Officers have as yet taken no action, and that the Officers are becoming impatient. This may possibly hasten matters a little. I am, very respectfully Your obdt. servant (Sgd) C. C. Augur Brigadier General, U.S. A.
