Our camp is on a sidehill in the grove of hard wood and it is a good place, the only objection being the distance from water it being 1/2 a mile from the river; we chop down the trees for wood, the only rail fence being use up the first night. The weather the past 2 weeks has been quite mild, like Indian summer, it rains a little to-day, and has one day before; taking it on the whole, we have had nice weather for marching the 300 and some odd miles we have since leaving Louisville, Oct 1, and that is the hardest and most trying part of our duty, loaded with knapsack 2 or 4 days rations 40 rounds cartridges, gun, &c.
