fell in a perfect shower aound us we marched into the field and formed but were soon ordered back. oiur troops being all driven back then commenced such a day as I never want to witness again. the cavilry were kept in the rear all the time after the thing and were not much exposed but our forces were steadily driven in till about half past four when our heavy seage guns planted right on the hill at Sanding and our gun boats could reach them with out danger to our men when they opened dreadfull fire on them about that time Gen Nelson arrived on the opposite side of the river with reinforcements which were transported across as fast as possiable about dark the firing ceased except the gun boat which kept it up all night every twenty minutes
