[different handwriting] I do solemnly swear that this is the original letter, delivered to me by Samuel [Swartwout?] from Aaron Burr, at Natchitoches about the 6th or 8th of October last, and that the annexed letter from the said Burr, in his proper manuscript, bearing date "Philadelphia 25th of "July 1806" was delivered to me at the same time by the said Swartwout, that the [cypher?] from which this letter has been executed was employed between myself and the said Burr since the year 1799, or 1800—And I do further more swear, that I do not recollect the purpose of the letter refferred to by the said Burr, as bearing date the 13th May last, as I have kept no copy of it, but suppose it was one of several short notes written to him with the design to extract from him the particulars of some grand Project, which he mentioned to me in general terms for the first and only time, during his visit to St. Louis in the Autumn 1805—And I do further swear that this letter contains the first and only intimation I have ever received from the said Burr, except by his Agents, Swartwout and [Bollinan?], of any intention hostile to the Laws or Government of the United States—And I further swear that the letter which
