12 Their Conjurers The Indians esteem them the wisest men among them, whom they call Conjurers; Who consult with? God, about the Success of their wars & other affairs. They say that tho their God can tell them when their neighbouring Indians have any design upon them, yet he cannot acquaint them with ye designs of ye Inglish. Their Conjurers do sometimes raise? storms, or divert clouds from one place to another and make them fall where they will. This they do? by drawing Circles, & muttering words, by making a dreadfull howling, & using strange gestures and various Rites, upon which the wind ariseth &c. Their Conjurers can find out any thing that is hid, or try? and goe to it blind folded, except it be a Bible, which, has been often tryed, & they have been forced to acknowledge that our God is stronger than theirs.
