Dear Sherwood, Well, I finished a rough draught of my book the other day, read the thing a day or two later, and have had to decide that the best thing to do is to start another. The parts that should have been good, aren't; though some other parts are better than anything I've done. Unhappily they aren't enough to justify a book. Time gone, and energy burned - but no matter. If I can't produce a book I believe in, there's nothing to be done but write one that is satisfying. I've learned more clearly the limitations of things, and of myself, and while I was a bit discouraged for a day or two, I'm all out of it now, and hope to be at work before the end of the week on something else. I know I have to write something, and shall do it. But there's no use in fooling myself about the quality of the 478 pages I did. The University is starting again today, and fortunately I'm going to have as good a schedule as I did last year. That will help a lot.
