1401 Sausse Avenue Troy, New York. May 23, 1933

hand-written above "Conroy" Return to

Dear Conroy,

I have been meaning to write you about ANVIL. I think you've done a fine job with this first issue. No American magazine that I have seen has printed so much good proletarian fiction in one issue. I particularly like "Lunch Hour in Wall Street" and "The One Man Revolution."
I hope you are going to get a lot of stories about the daily struggles of the workers. Too many proletarian stories deal with suffering and with conversion.[[insert in ink: you ? ]] I think the daily struggles give opportunities for more effective and more varied stories. Chambers did one or two good stories of this type for the New Masses, but he's almost the only person who has tried it. Such stories would not only have literary advantages; they would be of real service to the movement.

above paragraph is bracketed and a hand-written note is in the left margin beside it: This is true, but Alan Calmes doesn't think so.

I'm delighted to hear that your book is to be published, and I 'm curious to see how you've changed it.
Whenever you find something you want me to review, send it along. After June 1 my address will be Grafton, N.Y.

Yours, Granville Hicks.
