Dear Sherwood Anderson Forgive me if I seemed silly & sentimental and made you uneasy. It all comes from the indequacy of the written word. If I had, the other night at dinner, said with a friendly grin - "You are too much like Jesus Christ - your stories are like crucifixions" - I think it would have been understood that I was perhaps only being vulgar - or that I was trying to express a fleeting notion that too many moderns wilfully sought tragedy - that they were too far away from the more robust mass which must ever press to some solution of world tragedy. That is what I tried to express that night in other terms and failed, I guess, because it is not all clear in my own mind. I do not believe in most theories - but I do get the feeling
