John Gould was not only a lover of birds but an artist of marked ability, having produced many exquisite paintings of beautiful birds during his lifetime.

He was ably assisted by his talented wife, whose artistic skills enabled her to duplicate her husband's originals on plates for printing. Thus, the art of John Gould has been preserved for more than a century.

The illustration on the cover is a miniature of one of the original folio prints which are now extremely rare, and highly valued by collectors.
