Tolkien, V. Woolf, Annie Dillard and other favorites -

Among my favorite books this season are underlined The Widower's Son, a novel

by Alan Sillitoe; underlined Jack, A Biog, of Jack London by Andrew Sinclair; a Princeton pb underlined Ancient Myth in Modern Poetry (sensational) by Feder. I intend to read underlined Letters on Literature and Politics by Edmund Wilson, underlined The Path Between the Seas by David McCullough, and underlined Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. I feel secure in such a feast of good books coming out.

                                                                                                           CM
For those of you who have experienced the vast but limited pleasure

of reading Leonard Woolf's highly-abridged edition of Virginia Woolf's thirty volumes of journals, there is underlinedThe Diary of Virginia Woolf Vol. I. It is the first of five volumes of the underlined complete diaries; the other four will be issued over the next few years.

The liveliest writers of belles-lettres seem to be from the Spanish-

speaking countries these days. Alfred A. Knopf has recently published a handsome two-volume anthology in honor of some of these authors and their predecessors: underlined The Borzoi Anthology of Latin American Literature. It opens with a letter written by Christopher Columbus announcing the discovery of America, and closes with short stories by Donoso, Marquez, Fuentes, and other modern masters.

                                                                                                               PC
Lovers of Tolkien's works have waited years for underlined The Silmarillion

(Houghton Mifflin, `0.95, First Am. Ed.), the creation story of Tolkien's world. It is a pleasure to sell such a book! Recently we ran an ad with a photo of Tolkien relaxing beneath a huge tree. The ad read, "Welcome to Greenfield and World Eye Bookshop, J.R.R. Tolkien, underlined The Silmarillion." We are still chuckling over the fact that some readers thought Tolkien himself was at World Eye. Because he underlined is, in all his books, from paperback to leather, boxed, gift editions.

Annie Dillard's (author of underlined Pilgrim at Tinker Creek) new book,

underlined Holy the Firm (Harper and Two, 6.50) has just arrived, and I am worshipping it, with it. Charlie calls her " a female Thoreau." Have you seen thee underlined complete Thoreau Journal, in two big volumes? The bookshop feels incomplete when we are out of it. We had the honor of sending the set to W.H. Auden, in Austria, a few years ago, and he was "absolutely enchanted with them." LM

Come around! Lynn Miller, Charlie Miller, Patricia Crosby
