3. audience - if you let it. I like to hear you talk extemporaneously. The timing and phrasing seems warm and exactly right then. It gets cold and anemic when you read. If you looked 'em in the eye and hit from the shoulder, you could knock them cold.

    Sorry if I have hurt your feelings.  
    I don't like Phyllis Whitney's general way of working.  It's far too mechanical for my own taste.  But she is such a dynamic person, isn't she?  And she has such enthusiasm.  I love to watch her and listen to her for those.  She's honest and frank and give 'em what she's got to give.  Max says she'll be an editor some day.  I believe it.  Her little girl is like a regular Pixie.
   I was reading over some of the opening paragraphs of my story and had not before realized how flat they sound.  Part is me, but part was Algren.  Never in my life did I meet a person who made me feel more of an unqualified zero.  He is amazing.  I cannot understand
