(Resumed here Feb. 14)

unpleasant. Some of the "moderns" seem to think that being modern consists, not in design nor in organized lines, related spaces or harmonious forms, but solely in using raw color as if slapped on by someone who did not know how to draw or paint. I like raw color and I find distortion (if done for some purpose of design) very stimulating; but I do not sympathize with the scorn for technique such as I have just referred to. I hope in saying all this I am not barring out the work of your young man. If I am, send the painting any way and I'll keep it in the attic until sometime when he's famous and you are rich - then I'll sell it to you for $3000! Along these lines (rather remotely) I want to write you further but will do so on a separate sheet in same envelope.* Cordially Burton Emmett
