Dear Jack,

Someone was thoughtful enough to send me

an invitation to Jack Conroy Day, this coming Tuesday. I can't make it, much as I'd love to. Still enmeshed in end-of-the-term academic work here. But I do want to rush my heartfelt congratulations and warmest good wishes. It is clearly going to be a great occasion and a fitting honor to you.

The photo on the invitation (you at the wooden

fence by the cornfield) is superb. It catches your spirit and your humor, and it puts you in your proper home-country setting.

Speaking of pictures, the one above is Midge's

(Chicken's) version of our 3-year-old greyhound, Blazer. He is a barrel of fun.
