Mr. Sherwood Anderson

Marion, Va. Dear Mr. Anderson: I appreciated your book & read it with appreciation. Seeing in the Balto Sun, that no copies of Candide were to be had in bookstores there - or only 2 - due likely to the opinion of one Federal person who held up an importation of them recently in Boston, I dropt [sic] into - book-store here & was handed out a leather-bound edition for 95c just as casually as if I had asked for Chesterfield. I am sending your book & Candide to a friend of mine for I think they have much in common. The Candides & your people will naturally rule the world or their children because they are normal, feel things without being obfuscated by any peculiar forms of reasoning, respect or reverence. They are, of course, capable of getting more hard-boiled, more double crossing at a moments notice
