wanted to tell you is that I am sincerely ambitious to build up, as time goes on, one of the finest Sherwood Anderson collections in America. I can almost see your sneer of contempt at so petty, tawdry an idea- but you're wrong and, if we should get acquainted some day, I can prove it. This would be one hell of a world if there had been no collectors! My means are more than ample and I would say "the finest" instead of "one of the finest" except that I would have no chance against some wild rich man who might want to buy up all of your manuscripts as John Quinn did with Conrad's- and also except for the fact that, more and more, "modern art" paintings and prints are clamoring for a large share of my collecting money. As I said, I have wanted to tell you this. That is all for now. Please dont bother to acknowledge this letter- maybe some day I'll write one that deserves an answer. Sincerely Burton Emmett 5/2/26
