Shaker Rd. } Summer only Canterbury, N.H. 03224 July 6, 1977 Dear Jack:

Indeed, your nice letter of May 18 underline was /underline lying in wait for us in the Amherst

post office when we reached home. It must have come the day after we set out on our journey. Midge (Chicken) & I are very, very glad we made connections anyway. We wouldn't have missed that afternoon with you for anything. It was a peak, in a week that was crowded with high points for us. You are every bit as fascinating, deep-reading, & yet light-hearted as your books & your letters.

We hope your wife is up & around & feeling well again. We elected to stay at that Swiss Village Motel

you pointed out & found it is still inexpensive ($13 for us two) & clean &, best of all, quiet. All our memories of the "Athens of the West" are good ones. The next morning, the Sunday we headed north to Ottumwa & Oskaloosa, Iowa, was a HOT one. It hit 101 [degrees] in Des Moines that day, we heard. We contended with a mild 96 [degrees] in eastern Iowa. Nonetheless, we sought out the meadow & woods we used to to "courtin' " in, in the days at Penn College when we were first going together. But first we had to work our way through a new housing development & high school & that sort of litter that has junked up one end of the old college farm.

I'm enclosing your review of Richard Wright. I enjoyed it a lot & made a xerox of it. Also, instead of sending

you a copy of underline Writers in Revolt /underline to replace the autographed copy you gave us, I'm enclosing $4. Actually, I wanted the second copy -- so I'd rather send the money than the book. The price on the book is $3.95, but I feel foolish making out a check for that. If $4 doesn't cover your cost, be sure to let me know & I'll send the difference. (over)
