2 my good old friend and fellow classmate, and fellow Cross-Country and long distance man of former days departed me. Did you see his review in Mountain Life and Work, official publication of Berea College? Don almost died when this book was published and it would have been appropriate for me to have sent him a long empty coffin, made like a guitar box, (big for shoulders and tapering at the feet - a real old time coffin and not one of these modern caskets with the bright handles) since I would have been the cause of his death.

   I wonder if you run into this sort of thing when The Disinherited was published?  If I were to list ten of the best books written by Americans of all times, this novel would be one -   Hell, the reaction around here to underlined:  Foretaste of Glory has been unfavorable -  but I 'm surprised at Dan's being so reactionary (but don't forget he preaches)   About my books, I'd never have thought it, I hope, the for books that he has to be published are all masterpieces.  And I mean this!  The South needs more
