October 31, 1974 Dear Gladys & Jack -

 You will be shocked to learn that my darling Joe was struck by a truck and died in a nearby hospital

about 2 hours later. It was a terrible shock to learn of it via phone. Merry Ann came as soon as she could, but she lives 13 miles away, so I went by cab & she & Fran came to the hospital. This happened Oct. 8, but I just haven't gotten to writing to all out of town friends. Carol & Bob flew in & stayed 5 days. You may have remembered that we were in the process of selling our home. We were anxious to get out, but now I hope I can stay until business affairs are completed.

 Today is Hallowe'en, but there are far fewer children out. We used to count on over 100.
