consciousness of the needs of my fellow men [unclear inserted line] to devote my life to the single purpose, which has ever since possessed it, [unclear] to apply our common Christianity to common life and its social conditions.

That was the first indication of duty. The other is the opening of the largest possible opportunity for the fulfillment of this purpose, under conditions peculiarly adapted to those very aptitudes for service in which the greater efficiency has [unclear] in here and the [unclear] attestations of divine approval have been [unclear]. Thies opportunity I also believe the Chicago Theological Seminary has been enabled to afford me by a strangely Providential combination of conditions, such as exist in no other Seminary or city.
