Dear Jack,
When I got up this morning it occurred to me I probably acted like a complete jerk in the manner which I deserted you guys last nite. I had so enjoyed it, and wanted you all to stick around even though I was so pooped I just hadda lie down. But instead of the words coming out graciously and making you feel at home even though the host hadda retire, they probably sounded just the opposite. I hope you wren't offended - or rather I hope you'll forgive me. As does Terry, I have the highest regard and respect for you as a person and literary figure - and as I thought it over, I seemed ridiculous to myself for having been so rude to a guy who double underline: is the father of proletarian literature in our country. Sol & Joe & Ensi knew I didn't mean to be offensive but it was the first time you had been to our house and a wrong first impression sometimes never gets the chance to be corrected.
