February 24, 1951 Dear Sir Jack,

SAM PATCH arrive here today, and we thank you very much. He will be Hester Jill's first friend in fiction when the time comes. Meanwhile Jo and I will read the book and make sure there are no swear words or subtle un-Americanisms.
Please do not be offended because I am paying for it with the enclosed rubber check. It is a matter of principle with us to do so with regard to books which are things so many people seem to think come out of thin air at no expense to anybody.
I believe all the news of importance from here is contained in my letter of the other day. Again, many thanks for the book, and when you have time be sure to let us hear from you.
