Dear Sherwood, Well, bless your heart! Your letter and Mr. Liveright's came in the same mail yesterday, and this afternoon I mailed him the two stories that you read -- clean copies, however. It was damn decent of you to do this for me -- and it means a lot, as you know. I'm trying so hard to do something real in my book: and I've been working steadily since I saw you last. I should be finished before Christmas -- and then New York, I hope, for a time . . . It may be that I can see you then. I hope so.
