Hendersonville, N.C. Feb. 24, 1957 Dear Jack:

     There has been practically nothing to write about all winter except that we have no snow, lots of rain, temperatures above 70º and one cold night down to 3ºF.   Carl Sandburg had a birthday on a Sunday that was the foggiest I have seen down here, and despite a cold, took an outdoor stroll.  I get that from the local paper, not having seen Mr. Sandburg.
     I hope Nelson Algren suffered no ill effects from breaking the ice; but I wondered what he was carrying in the way of groceries that broke the ice on his way home.  And the ever-mindful Tribune did not say what became of the groceries.  Some day, when he has the time, I wish he would write me a letter.  I seem to be suffering from the side effects of Thomas Wolfe who is so beloved by the local sophisticates but not the natives.  Every time we go out Brevard Rd. we pass his "angel."
