full strong in the west, the literary forces of life in this country are largely in the East & are going to be for more than one generation. That means a calm, a depth, a soberness, a balance, a finish to work, a freedom from crudity -- & an absence of fiction, that are all invaluable & that tell more than most men realize until they are old. Aside from your work as a teacher, you are doing a missionary work right here that is invaluable. I do not doubt it is done under such discouragements & annoyances & perhaps apparent lack of appreciation. But no form of labor was excepted from the "Sweat of thy brow" condition: & it is the New England way to say little or nothing if there are no complaints -- to us unclear. But you have here marked the beginning of the change in Congregationalism from a group of churches that give the gospel to those that will support it
