present status, but in the future, it is proposed to admit editors, publishers, librarians and writers of How-to-do-it books, or very technical books, as underlined Associate Members. /underline

It is my hope to build up the underline regular /underline members, especially the State membership, first.
One of your nominees, Dr. French, has written "critical studies" and another, Mr. Thorpe Mann, is a literary editor

(and author). - Should these two, and all the others be invited as regular members? In other words, do these ^two both qualify as authors of published books of "creative writing."

I am sorry to trouble you with this further question, but you will see why this knowledge is desirable.
underline CONFIDENTIAL /underline

For the past 20 (maybe more) years, all members have been passed on underline solely by /underline Miss Fanny Butcher, the dean of Chicago literary critics, who has never written a book herself! Her autobiography comes out this fall. She has considered books of poems, published-plays and paper-backs to be underline not books at all! /underline The board feels that this policy must be changed.

Cordially yours, Ellsworth Laflin.
