Flemish and primarily of the fifteenth Century continues on well into the Sixteenth century ad in consequence the Arts Club Exhibition includes, quite properly, pieces designed as late as 1520 or 1525. In the latest of these the new Italian fashion that was influencing everything from clothes to castles all over Europe at the moment, is very evident. A particularly interesting example is a Descent from the Cross (No. 7) adapted unblushingly from an engraving by Marc Antonio Raimondi on the basis, probably, of a drawing by Rafael. But even in this boldest borrowing there is a translation of the Italian conception and mannerisms into an idiom strongly Flemish-- With the full triumph of the Renaissance style tapestry's great moment passed--Later pieces are decorative interesting valuable, but they are not great as the Gothic pieces are great.
