March, 1934 I did something like this once before. It was quite some time ago in a classroom at Brooklyn College in New York City where I was taking a course in “The Modern Novel”. The discussion that day was on Sherwood Anderson. I had just finished giving a report on this author and the instructress seemed to resent my too-complimentary remarks. I delivered a damn good report, I tell you! But this Ph.D. mam, in desperate need of either a faith or a man, makes this comment: “He is ignorant and sentimental “. Just like that! It is not to soothe you that I say the entire class was disgusted. But it is an old college custom that an “A” is worth thinking as the teacher does. So nobody answers this but I know what they think. I see them after class and we talk plenty! But after class she says to me “So you’re in with that crowd too?” I thought “I’d rather be in with anyone than be in a fog like you “ - I said “Sure!” So we argued and I challenged her to pick out a passage from “Winesburg” that betrays you and she comes around to the fact that you write nicely but too much about certain people and their environment and why all the sex and the report was good…
