II. Then I thought of my teacher. God! what horror that a Ph.D. Should so speak- I thought that she had to open the windows because of the stench in her own mind. Ph.D - bah! Because I couldn’t see anything wrong with. All I saw was honesty in the portrayal of the vices and virtues of those people. And if brutal things were exposed, they sparkled with a human, healthy cleanliness. Everyone in the class had to give an oral report on a novelist. I spoke about you - as “representation of American Life”. I told the class about Winesburg- Poor white - Dark Laughter. I read excerpts. Some were pretty raw for a co-ed class. But I let them have it. I put it across swell. I sat down. The teacher had to admit the report was good but she added “I think you overestimate his ideas” Then I knew he needed a husband more than a faith. — Right now I’m reading “Story Teller’s story” and I feel like kicking myself. Because all your idea are there and I should have read that book before I gave my report.
