It's good to have a reason to write to you again. Ford, I hope your winter went better than ours because here it was a mess and still is,

no spring yet and maybe never. Actually, I don't feel that pessimistic. I think I told you in my Christmas letter about being Writer-in-Residence at Barat College in Lake Forest. It's been a good experience messing around a college and feeling sort of phony academic but very respectable. The good sisters at Barat seemed to have thrown off their nun's clothes like bad habits and now wear pants, mini's, red hose, white leather boots and even, God help us, one had on false eyelashes I swear, which sent a great chill through me - the ecumenical identity crisis can only get worse from there and I can only imagine that the sisters will soon be teaching courses on Lenny Bruce.

Anyway, as Barat is next door to Lake Forest College (a very good place) I've met some clever English people who seem to know what they're doing.

I want to tell you about one professor in particular, a young man by name of Robert Greenfield, whose field is contemporary Amer. lit. and ^who has told me that he's been toying with the idea of doing a book on Jack Conroy, author of The Disinherited.
