my advanced course in 20th C. Am. lit. again this Spring. I'll let you know if any really new ideas about it come from my students. The message of this quilt is mine to you in Moberly. H.

This Six Point star was made as a friendship quilt for Sarah Ann VanWagoner

in 1849. Each white block was inscribed by friends who were welcoming her when she visited her grandmother and aunt in Newark at Christmas. One of the verses, visible on this section reads.

"The skies that cover thee I pray
   May never wear a frown
And love that strengthens day by day
  Thy early friendship crown."

Purchased from a direct descendant of the original owner, 1976. Collection of the Newark Museum, Newark, N.J. ______ Patchwork Graphics, Inc. 1980 P.O. Box 304 Old Chelsea Station New York, N.Y. 10011
