20 May 1969 Dear Jack,
It was good to hear from you and the sallet and the tracts and all. And I'm glad you made the Yukon trip. did you meet our poet and reviewer, J. D. O'Hara? I'd be curious to know what manner of man he is. I am much interest in the H. H. Lewis proposal. And I would indeed like to get Ben Hagglund to write more for us. I too thought his TRIP one of the great things we've been able to print. But before I write to him I'd like to know more about what you've done for underlined: December. It wouldn't make sense for Ben to duplicate or repeat what you've already said. What I hope will happen is that you have a critical piece on his verse and Ben could then do the biographical kind of reminiscence. Is this possible? I have another matter on hand too. In the fall of 1970 I am going to be giving a seminar here on the little magazines of the 20's and 30's. It comes under "American Studies," which have a budget for visiting dignitaries. Would you be willing to come up here for a couple of days? It would involve talking to the class, fifteen kids, for a couple of hours, going to a cocktail or something like that, maybe visiting a few other classes and also having some kind of meeting informally with students interested but not in the seminar. I have so far thought of you and Ben Botkin and maybe Ben Hagglund. I want to stay away from the hotshots like Rahv. I am not sure how much the thing pays but it does include fare and perhaps a couple hundred bucks. If you are interested I shall begin enquiries as to exact amounts. I hope you say yes. We can put you up in a fairly posh guest room on the campus and see that your are fed. Can't promise hawg jawz, sorry to say. Let me know at your convenience about these two things. The Lewis. The Northfield visit. Meanwhile and always, all the best to you all.
Yrs. Erling handwritten note at end - Would Joe Kalan work in a situation like this? handwritten note in left margin We can't figure dates until the College prints its schedule. But we could settle on a month & maybe even a week. In the, say, second week October. Something like that.
