Jessel wearing that silly uniform from time to time and Amsterdam wearing a small American flag, calling attention to it on one TV show. You may know that Edwin Newman of NBC had to shut Jessel off on a recent TODAY broadcast, when Jessel compared the NY Times and the Washington Post with Pravda. I heard him sone [sic] months ago on a Steve Allen show broadcast (we get it here after midnight, but that show goes on around dinnertime in Calif.) when Allen had Madalyn Murray O'Hair as one, in fact, the main guest. Asinine remarks, great religious platitudes, plus flag-waving was the Jessel performance that night.
I often though I'd like to visit the Ozarks, and I'm sure it's nothing like it used to be when I first thought about going - some twenty years ago. I would think that the Sun-Times would be the one to fold, if that is one of the two newspapers mentioned as having trouble, as the Daily News is very live, particularly with the Royko column and other well-known columnists, and their foreign service has always been a leader, though I disagree with a lot they say. My sister-in-law in her letter said she was leaving for a short holiday in Switzerland. You may have noticed that in the towns of England there aren't many trees nor foliage, though the English are great for gardening and home flower pots are ubiquitous. The area where I live has large elm trees, in fact I can hardly see the houses sometimes for the leaves and branches of trees on our street - when looking across the street. I trust you and family are reasonably well, and I plan to take the large card you sent me to England when I go and show it to my sister-in-law. Thanks again for the card and accompanying letter.
Regards, Mead P.S.: The Sophie McAuley of the enclosed clipping was a friend of the Sheridan family. McAuley, now semi-retired and living apart from her, is from Canada. Was a Loop window-washer, and held two jobs for years, one as janitor nights. He's a great friend of Jimmy Sheridan, as he was of Jack.
