I opened the door, not knowing ^exactly why, and admitted a little grey cat which flew around the room in a state of the wildest excitement, leaping crossed out: from over the furniture and finally subsiding on Katharine's lap, "Why, it's our kitty! She must have seen us come in, and recognized me. Kitty dear, are you out of your mind with excitement? I wish we had some milk to give her."
When the few sticks had burned down on the
hearth, we made our way back to the front door somehow shaken, sad and irresolute. "Run back to Lorna and Alva now kitty darling - I gave her to Lorna when I left." Katharine took the house keys and put them in her purse, and the little grey cat frisked fastidiously at our feet. "Toshiko wasn't always kind to the cat. That was one of the things I couldn't understand."
One crossed out: year winter we were both in Paris and as it
