G March 2nd. Another anniversary of Texan independence. It was celebrated ^ in Galveston by the Sunday & other schools, by the military companies, literary institutions, religious societies & citizens generally in a spirit which shows that the event commemorated was a boon worthy of the most grateful remembrance.

 Although the Declaration of Independence was but a measure embraced by the people of Texas - then but a handful - as an only and desperate expedient from the choice presented to them by Mexico, either to fly the country, & leave behind them the acquisitions of their productions, toils & sufferings, or submit to a decree of extermination.
 With every prospect to discourage them, with every disparity of means, numbers, & military preparation against their enterprize & undertaking, which in case of failure,

has been pronounced a model of temerity, was crowned with the most complete success, & in the short space of eight years, has transformed into an abode of peace - crossed out intelligence, industry & prosperity, a land which under the dominion of another people claiming to be civilized, had failed, to give any evidences of emerging from barbarism, and only began to show signs of improvement
